Orthopaedics is the medical specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system, which includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves, allows you to move, work, and be active. While orthopaedic surgeons are familiar with all aspects of the musculoskeletal system, many orthopaedists specialize in certain areas, such as the foot and ankle, spine, shoulder, hand, hip or knee. They may also choose to focus on specific fields like pediatrics, trauma or sports medicine.
Total Joint Replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal or plastic prosthesis. In a total joint replacement (also called arthroplasty), the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components. Joints that are commonly replaced are hips, knees and shoulders.
Our hands serve many purposes. Hands help us eat, dress, write, earn a living, create art and do many other activities. To accomplish these tasks and activities, our hands require sensation and movement, such as joint motion, tendon gliding and muscle contraction. When a problem takes place in the hand, care must be given to all the different types of tissues that make function of the hand possible.

Wish I could be happy. This is not the first time a bone and joint doctor gave me a time for an appointment and then call and say I missed it an hour before my actual appointment! This place has terrible front desk staff for making proper appointments! Now I have to continue suffering in pain with no help due to never getting a single personal appointment. But lets wait and see if they do it with my work comp too

Dr. Pick, Katie (PT) and ALL of the staff of NWIB are excellent. I was scheduled for an appointment right away. Dr. Pick did an great job of diagnosing my issue. He discussed all of my options, and when I decided on surgery, the procedure was scheduled for the next week! Dr. Pick did a wonderful job and was so kind during the whole process. I have to compliment the whole team at NWIB.
The front desk staff are all so caring and friendly. The x-ray team was great! And my physical therapy is going like gangbusters. If you have the need for orthopedic care of any kind, I highly recommend the team at Northwest Iowa Bone, Joint and Sports Surgeons.

Dr. Pick is/ was an excellent, knowledgeable, compassionate surgeon when I had my rotator cuff surgery. I would highly recommend him! The entire staff is professional and amicable. One other staff member I would like to comment on is my physical therapist, Katie Hesse. She is of one the most caring, compassionate people I have ever met. She is knowledgeable, professional, and caring. I will actually be disappointed when my therapy is concluded! Sincerely, Paula Klein

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about communication. Dr. Hough and his team have reached out on a regular basis and they explain everything in manner I can understand. I'm on week two after shoulder surgery and they did a good job. If you have communication problems or don't think things are explained just download the app and everything is uploaded right there for you to see.
Stop wanting everything to be hand fed to you and ask what needs to be asked. I would let them do surgery on me again if need be. Oh, there staff are friendly and respectful and I'm not an easy person to deal with.

I was extremely pleased with every detail of my recent total knee replacement done by Dr Andrew Pick on June 3rd. What great team work displayed by everyone at Spencer Hospital! The nurses are top notch. The food is delicious and served by such wonderful workers. I chose Dr. Andrew Pick because he had done a friend of mine total knee replacement surgery and she highly recommended him and the Spencer Hospital.
Even though it was an 1 1/2 drive for us it was well worth the extra miles. I was searching for an ortho that would do the iovera process before the knee replacement. No one in my area does this procedure. I have heard of excellent recovery after having this done before surgery. It is covered by Medicare but was not covered by my Blue Cross which is very disappointing!
Why wouldn't something that can get you back to work sooner and prevent you from having to live on opioids not be insured! I am severely allergic to pain meds and they still wouldn't approve it. Dr Pick took time with me and made sure i understood everything that was going to take place. He kept my family informed of what was going on. I am doing great and two weeks ahead of physical therapy progress!
My follow up appt Dr was pleased with the results. You can tell he takes great pride in his work and is a very respectful man with great compassion! I highly recommend Dr Andrew Pick.

I wanted to share my experience, I am an occupational health nurse and have had communication with several providers from this clinic assisting employees with work related as well as non work related issues when the employee request my assistance. Their detail to patient care is stellar as well as their patient outcomes. They also offer a annual Orthopedic Conference in Spencer annually in order to share knowledge with nurses, occupational and physical therapist in the area. This is a great benefit for education locally and contact hours for nursing. Thank you for all you do for the Spencer and surrounding communities.

Communication is poor at best. It doesn't really seem like they care what is happening to the patient and a lot of jargon is thrown at you to make you feel stupid. I feel their primary concern is getting the insurance money and not giving you the treatment or respect we as patients deserve. Very unhappy this is one of the only choices we have in northwest Iowa.
