The Michigan Headache and Neurology Clinic® is a private neurology practice specializing in the treatment of adults and adolescents with all types of painful disorders of the head and face. We treat migraine, cluster, tension-type headaches, chronic daily headaches and facial pain disorders, including trigeminal neuralgia. We are also known as The Michigan Headache Clinic®, part of Messina Neurology™ so we treat all types of common neurological illnesses. The key to our clinic's success is teamwork.
Services
The Michigan Headache and Neurology Clinic has been evolving in Michigan since 1981 and consists of our centrally located headache clinic, our web-based headache information pages and a working relationship we have developed with many skilled colleagues in different parts of Michigan over the years.
We welcome new patients by self-referral and referral from other physicians. Many insurances allow patients to make their own referral to us, such as the conventional Blue Cross policies, commercial insurances, Physician's Health Plan, etc. Others will need to ask their primary physicians to refer them to us.

Dr. Messina perscribed Effexor for migraine treatment without even exploring other options first. He never explained that it is possible to develop a dependency on this drug. I experienced side effects from Effexor and begged the clinic to help me taper off the dosage. His staff did not perscribe me enough doses to safely get off off the meds, so I suffered from severe withdrawal symptoms. Had to work with my PCP to continue tapering off the dosage, as Dr. Messina's clinic refused to help me. UPDATE: After 4 years, I have finally been able to wean myself off of the Effexor perscribed (unnecessarily) to me by Dr. Messina.
I would never recommend this clinic to anyone, in fact I specifically warn people about this clinic and Dr. Messina's reckless prescription of anti-depressants for migraine treatment. This has negatively impacted my life for years and it never helped the migraines at all. Please be careful and do your research on SSRIs and DO NOT trust Dr. Messina or his staff regarding drug side effects/dependency.

I traveled a long way to see Dr. Messina and it was so worth it. Upon walking in, I was greeted by a nice lady at the front desk. They got me in to see the doctor within a few minutes. Him and his staff made me feel like the only patient they had and I felt like I was family. Very very thankful for them and I will definitely recommend them to anyone struggling with headaches or migraines. I wish ALL doctors offices were as compassionate and thorough as Michigan Headache and Neurology!

Dr. Ed Messina has provided my neurological care for the better part of 20 years! He stands out in his field and is one of the leading neurologists in the country. He and his team provide expert, compassionate care for all headache patients. As a fellow health care provider, I can fully appreciate when other practitioners deliver exceptional medical care.
I also highly applaud Dr. Messina for remaining fiercely independent and uninfluenced by large outside health care systems. This results in unbiased diagnosis and delivery of medications specifically appropriate to each patients condition. Dr. Messina has been a godsend to me. I have struggled with migraines since I was 5 and some doctors really don't take me seriously. I have had many doctors not want to take the time to really listen and try to get to the route of the problem, they just throw another pill at you, but not Dr. Messina, he listens and truly cares and wants to help you.
I don't know what I have done this long without him. I never feel like he rushes through an appointment; he will do anything to make you feel better and put your headaches at bay. He never settles at just O.K. He strives for perfection and I couldn't ask for anything better. The hour and a half drive is worth it! There are not many doctors like him in this world, or even this profession.
The brain is a mystery and he is doing a fantastic job at trying to figure it out even though it is different in each person. Thank You Dr. Messina for taking the time with me and a chance on us all.

Dr. Messina and the staff at Michigan Headache and Neurology Clinic provide effective and empathetic care. I've suffered from horrible migraines for almost 20 years and within my first 2 months of seeing Dr. Messina, my migraines (and anxiety) are under control. I was averaging 15-18 migraine days a month and am down to 4 a month. Dr. Messina truly took the time to assess my health holistically in order to treat my migraines.
I've never had a better experience with a doctor and I would HIGHLY recommend seeing him if you are struggling with headaches/migraines. You know you're in good hands when your doctor ends your visit by assuring you he'll never give up on you! Thank you Dr. Messina and all the staff at Michigan Headache and Neurology Clinic!

I have been a patient of Dr Messina since 2004 and I really hope that he can train someone to practice medicine the way he does before the day this kind and caring man decides to retire! I've been in several ER'S with my migraines with horrible outcomes, pain clinics, and even a week stay at the famous "Diamond Headache Clinic" of Chicago, that Dr Messina himself sent me to out of concern of my pain.
If this man was out for money, like a lot of our medical community is, he would have kept me in his care. Come to find out, after trying everything else, Dr Messina always has figured things out for me. My migraines have been under control for years now. I also had another very strange condition that I never mentioned to Dr Messina because I thought it was a dental problem.
After suffering for years I finally asked him if he knew who could help me. Guess who helped my problem to end, Dr Messina! I really have to give credit to his amazing staff for always treating me like a friend or family that they care about. His wife and head nurse, Jane, goes out of her way after hours and weekends. His office staff always is so helpful and are so friendly!
I know I'm forgetting someone or something here. I just can't say enough! Dr Messina has even given me and my husband his cell to reach him over a weekend for emergencies or on certain occasions. What doctor does this? Dr Messina and his staff do. You can't go wrong with this office. It might not be fancy, but it's the most in-depth time you will ever spend with a medical staff that cares about you! You will probably leave there feeling like you also gained someone in your healthcare corner for once.

Dr Messina has been my neurologist for quite a while. I would say he has saved my life as far as helping to provide the care needed to have a good quality of life while fighting chronic migraines. He is smart, always up on the latest research, and always looking at new ways to treat stubborn cases like mine. I would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone needing neurological care.
