One unique aspect of Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers is our outpatient, measurement-based approach to drug and alcohol treatment. The inpatient model provides treatment in a setting that removes the patient from their daily life, job and family. However, Kolmac allows patients to live at home and keep working during treatment and recovery. In 1973, George Kolodner MD, our Chief Innovation Officer, designed the first intensive outpatient (IOP) program in the United States. Kolmac has implemented his highly effective approach to help more than 50,000 patients recover from alcohol and drug addiction.

The history of Kolmac starts with Dr. George Kolodner's assignment to Bethesda Naval Hospital as a young Navy doctor. There he saw patients with alcohol addiction recover in the hospital's inpatient treatment program. After leaving the Navy in 1973, Dr. Kolodner decided to develop a treatment model that would replicate the clinical success he had observed at Bethesda, but on an outpatient rather than an inpatient basis.
