Services
Our humble beginnings started with a conversation between a doctor and a 12 year-old patient in the late 1930's. Dr. Douglas Gibson, the first orthopedist in Des Moines, asked John Kelly what he wanted to be when he grew up. After hearing that John wanted to be a doctor, Dr. Gibson suggested he study orthopedics and join him in practice when he completed his training.
As the foundation for your lower body's movement, the foot and its numerous bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles can be a source of significant joint pain. Whether you are typing on a keyboard, playing an instrument, or working in the yard, you rely on your hands daily. The Hand Therapy experts at DMOS have the experience and training to treat all types of hand, wrist, and upper extremity conditions. We understand that hip and knee pain can make everyday tasks difficult and our fellowship-trained doctors are here to help.
Orthopedic braces and supplies are referred to as Durable Medical Equipment (DME). Orthopedic DME's are typically braces and supports for the arms, ankles, elbows, back and more. These orthotic devices are ideal for physical therapy, rehabilitation and preventative support. If you suffer from chronic pain or have a condition that limits your capacity to properly move around, you may benefit from the use of a brace.

I was very impressed with Dr. Fox and his staff at DMOS. Dr. Fox answered all our questions, believe me we had quite a few. I was put at ease about my procedure and was treated very professionally by all staff. I would highly recommend Dr. Fox and his staff to everyone.

Dr. Dr Sullivan in his physician assistant Emily are very very kind and patient. He and she explained clearly where I am in progressing to full recovery from my biceps tendon tear repair. Additionally, Dr Sullivan did a fantastic job with the surgery and Emily helped me through post-op. Every time that I have that I have visited their office they never leave without making sure that all of my questions have been answered in my concerns addressed. My appreciation for the healthcare service that I received at dmos is profound. Thank you very kindly

I feel I have received great care at DMOS. From the front desk receptionists, x-ray techs, and provider performing surgery have been great. Even though using a different provider since my provider retired they took great care of me. If I need to have surgery again I wouldn't hesitate to use DMOS.

Dr. Sullivan and his surgical team and Methodist West along with DMOS Physical Therapy Team has been very good to me. I am recovering from hip reconstruction. After being in pain for a very long period of time I'm on my way back to a normal life. I am very grateful.

Very disappointed. Went to Urgent Care on 4/18 and was referred for MRI. Called to follow up and was told auth was pending. Called insurance company on 4/25 to learn that auth had not even been started. MRI approved on 4/25 and called DMOS multiple times with no return call. Finally returned call on 4/27 and was told could not get in for MRI until 5/5. Meanwhile, no treatment or follow up for suspected injury and student athlete has to continue to sit out until released. Now on hold for over 30 minutes. Disappointed in wait time. Customer service expectations not met.

Apparently they like to give patients the run-around. I really wanted to give a good review but after a disappointing experience, I have to share. Husband wanted to be seen at DMOS after breaking collarbone. Since he was seen at Mercy ER, we were told to call Mercy and have records sent to DMOS. Called Mercy and they said DMOS has to send in a request form.

Then it would take a few days from there. Called DMOS again. DMOS representative said it would be alright for us to pick up physical copies of the medical records from Mercy and give to the front desk at DMOS in West Des Moines and say it's for the doctor that was assigned to my husband's case. Then the doctor would review and the triage would call us back to schedule an appointment.

We did everything they said. Went to DMOS with requested papers and they wouldn't take our papers until he was seen at urgent care. Urgent care told us it would be 2 hours at least. This was never told to us over the phone but it didn't matter. No one was going to help us unless we went through their urgent care clinic first. We told them that we weren't needing an appointment today, we were just told to give the medical records to the doctor so he could review and call us back to arrange an appointment time.

They were confused. We were confused. I am extremely disappointed in their process and lack of communication. Wasted our time and energy. Sadly, I do not recommend going there at all.

Had a followup appointment for a knee replacement. No issues with my surgery, but scheduling is not their strong suit. My appointment was for 1:30. I arrived at 1:15. At 2:15 I was still in the waiting room. Keep in mind that this appointment was to see the PA not the doctor. At 2:24 I was finally taken to a room. Not sure why an appointment is necessary if it can't be followed. I always remember what my Dad said "if you are on time--you're late!"

I got referred here for a shoulder injury that had been causing me pain and prevented me from sleeping on one side. Dr. Sullivan spent all of 5 minutes examining me before sending me off for another appt for an MRI. My MRI experience was ok but my shoulder hurt a lot from the dye injection. Then my follow up appt, I walk in and am told that Dr. Sullivan isn't even in and no one bothered to call me.

I got seen by PA instead (I have nothing against PA's, but I didn't appreciate the lack of communication). My MRI results were not conclusive and was just asked if I wanted a cortisone shot. I said ok but I had NO idea how painful it would make my shoulder or that I wasn't supposed to use it after. No after care instructions were provided. I feel like my shoulder feels worse than when I went in and I am hoping that PT will help.

I know the medical professionals here are knowledgeable but my experience at DMOS left me in tears, twice, feeling like I didn't matter in the least and I was just another insurance reimbursement.

I had a small surgical procedure done on one of my fingers in office by Dr. Kallemeier and was very pleased with the results. She is professional yet personable. I was at ease the entire time. I would highly recommend her for hand issues.

I've seen Dr. Gaffey several times now. He has a good sense of humor. Explains exactly what he is going to do, if it will hurt or not and options. I love his personality and handling of things. Would highly recommend him. The staff at DMOS has been great from check in, x-ray to fitting of a splint for my thumbs. I've been at least five times and always a short wait time and quick turnaround. I know the cortisone shots hurt and the Dr. always reminds me but the shots have helped and lasted longer each time.
