Services
MaineGeneral Health is a comprehensive non-profit system with the mission of enhancing, every day, the health of our patients, our families and our communities. We do that through a range of health care services for people of all ages, in a variety of care settings. We focus on clinical excellence, patient and family experience and financial stability.
For your safety and the safety of others, we have special instructions to prepare for your appointment or visit a patient. Patients come first at the Alfond Center for Health, MaineGeneral's state-of-the-art inpatient facility in Augusta. From the physician who oversees your care, to the nurse who checks your temperature to the housekeeper who cleans your room, we will do everything we can to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Being in the hospital can be a scary and stressful experience, especially if it's your first time.
MaineGeneral Orthopaedics now offers same-day joint replacement surgery for knees and hips. If your insurance requires a referral, please call your primary care practice. If you don't need a referral and haven't seen another provider for this problem, please call us for an appointment. A medical assistant will bring you into an exam room where you may be asked to change into a gown or pair of shorts we provide. Once the X-ray images are ready, the physician will meet with you to discuss your diagnosis and treatment options.
You want advanced surgical care, delivered by experienced, compassionate and trusted caregivers, right here in the Kennebec Valley. We're with you. Our highly trained surgeons bring a wealth of reassuring experience to patients with a wide range of surgical needs. Our surgical teams also take extra steps to make sure every surgery is as safe as it can be.

From the time I entered the hospital for out patient surgery I couldn't ask for better service. Everyone I met went above and beyond, from the volunteers at the front to my physician (Dr Glidden), everyone was very busy and backed up. However, they all kept me informed at all stages, and a special thank you to Nurse Rhonda, for keeping me conforted.

My mother got sent home from the ER with a dangerous condition she had acute pancreatitis, but her biliary tract was blocked. She needed emergency surgery and they sent her home. We ended up bringing her back the next day and she was admitted. They performed emergency surgery but made her wait suffering in severe pain for two days and let me tell you the kind of pain it was.
She was screaming and writhing. For two more days. They gave her three different pain meds but it wasn't enough really. I gave 4 stars because although the doctors dropped the ball, the nurses were just incredible. They were kind, compassionate and had it not been for them, she would have been in pain for two MORE days while the surgeon got around to bothering to do it.
The four stars are entirely for them and for my OBGYN care because they are exceptional and I am saying this as a transgender individual. They go above and beyond. They're ER staff and doctors are just horrid. Basically they need to pay their nursing staff and fire their doctors and surgeons. Basically if you need outpatient care or hospitalization it's a great place. If you need ER or surgery, just go to Portland if you can.

My 2 year old son was having oxygen and breathing issues and urgent care has us take him to the ER. Because the triage nurse "didn't seem to her like it was an emergency" my son got bumped to the bottom of the list as we watched people just walking in get taken back to the ER. After almost 2 hours of waiting we had to ask the secretary what was going on, she said that my son was last on the list because of this so called triage nurses opinion and would probably be another few hours of waiting.in an empty waiting room because no rooms were clean.
I will NEVER take my child here again. What is wrong with you over there? You'd rather risk a toddlers health and take a lady with a black eye. you guys are a crooked hospital who cares for no one

Monday brought my cousin to ER. She was in severe pain and short of breath. I was told I had to sit in the car. My cousin has amputated leg and stage 4 cancer. She was there five hours in between testing she would be out in the waiting room. She Tex me to say she had to go to the bathroom then it was ok for me to come in and take her! When she had a chest exray she had to stand in one leg and short of breath.
I understand the shortest of staffing. I don't like leaving this on a negative, so suggesting maybe take some of the techs, students nurses, not sure if volunteers can. This was our first experience at ER and it wasn't a great one.

This place only Changes it's rules daily or hourly. Or maybe how the staff feels. Now no visitors with my kid. So my Child is in the ER alone and parent was told she has to go to the car and sit. I have NEVER met one person that works at Maine general that has bedside manners, they are the worse staffed hospital and with them always getting law suit that hasn't taught them anything, it's going to take a real good law suit for them to realize how bad they truly are. This place really should be shut down. The state needs to state stepping in and maybe it will take me making the calls to the state and getting them involved.

I've been in and out of hospitals for over two decades with incurable cancer and over a dozen other chronic illnesses. This hospital is the lowest pooch house I have ever visited. Rude. Crude. Dumb. Mean. Cruel. If I had to choose between this $hit house and a witch doctor - give me the pointy hats every single time.

Pathetic excuse of a place where human beings should be cared for and healed. My daughter underwent an emergency appendectomy here a few months ago. After she complained of severe pain in her lower abdomen and soon after vomited I contacted her pediatricians on call line, as it was near 11pm. The nurse quickly called me back and although I was unaware of what could be going on she advised me to seek emergency medical care as she felt she may have appendicitis.
Over the phone this woman diagnosed my daughters problem to be highly likely emergent. We arrived at the ER near midnight and were given a room somewhat quickly. But the time we spent between seeing anyone the few times we did, my childs pain became more severe. We arrived before midnight and the surgery she needed was performed at 10:30 am. Np surprise the surgeon advised me her appendix had ruptured by the time he removed it.
This was the care of my 11 year old child. I have had many disappointing visits to Maine general in the past and for that reason usually do not choose them if I've got the option. CMMC is FAR better. But it was close and I thought they would handle my childs care better than mine and what I've seen in the past. Luckily her surgeon was great very capable and she did well recovering and having her ruptured appendix removed laproscopically.
The nurses are often rude and useless at this hospital however and the amount the majority of the staff gives a bit of interest in patient care is pathetic. I wish I'd taken her elsewhere because she would've endured far less anguish feeling every bit of pain as her appendix ruptured inside her belly but I am grateful she was not given an incompetent surgeon at least, which is the reason I am okay with the one single star I was forced to provide in this review. Avoid Augusta Maine general hospital at all costs. They seem to hire anyone who can't get jobs elsewhere.

This is a decent regional hospital staffed by good people trying to do their best in an extremely challenging environment. I have experienced over the top great care and at other times left frustrated and angry Bottom line is if you dont need to be there, dont go. If you do need to be there be greatful to live in a place that offers this level of care.
This is a teaching hospital so you may get some students but the supervision is solid. Remember, nobody at the hospital is having a good day. Whatever you may think about it, the staff have the skills and are doing their best.
