The Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation (LPCF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity that awards grants to families in Louisiana to help ease the financial burden of out-of-pocket expenses when their children are undergoing life-saving heart surgeries. In addition, LPCF provides FREE heart screens in an effort to detect various cardiac abnormalities in high school athletes, namely, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is the leading cause of death in young athletes.Nearly 1 in 100 babies (about 40,000) are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) in the United States each year.

Pediatric Cardiology Associates was established in Baton Rouge in 1995 and since that time have referred hundreds of patients to surgical and interventional centers across the United States for the best cardiac care available. While this allowed Baton Rouge and south central Louisiana access to state of the art medical care, families often had to endure significant financial hardship.
A large majority of sudden cardiac arrests in young athletes is a result of underlying conditions that are exposed through physical activity. Each year, more than 3,000 American children and teenagers die while playing sports from an undiagnosed heart condition. Heart screens are NOT included in high school athletic physicals, leaving many cardiac conditions undetected.
Every year during the month of February, LPCF invites schools across the state to spread awareness for Congenital Heart Defects. Red and Blue are the designated awareness colors for CHDs. Most schools allow their students to wear a red and/or blue top with jeans or uniform bottoms for a $1 or $2 donation. All donations stay right here in the south central region of our state, helping local families and athletes.
