A cataract is clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens that prevents light from properly focusing on the retina, thus resulting in distorted vision. Although cataracts may be caused by a number of factors, such as eye injury or certain drugs, most often cataracts develop and progress with age.

My elderly dad had cataract surgery yesterday morning. The staff was welcoming and patient with him from the moment we checked in to when his nurse took him to the back. I was unable to go and be with him during his procedure, but he was well taken care of according to my dad. His post op nurse, Brittany, was the most gentle and attentive with him.
She patiently escorted and assisted my dad into my car, and on our ride back home, he couldn't stop sharing how wonderful Brittany took care of him after his procedure. Definately a great first experience with them!

I recently had cataract surgery in both eyes and the experience was totally acceptable. The administrative staff was knowledgeable and courteous. The medical specialists were completely accommodating to my needs, and all questions were addressed. The follow-up call I received a week later was a nice touch, and reinforced my belief that the facility truly cares about their patients.

I had my cornea transplant done here last week and it was simply a great experience. I did not feel like I was at a clinic, it felt more like a hotel resort. The staff was awfully nice and the nurses were more than comforting and just made the experience less stressful. I was called the day before told to be there by 10:30am, I arrived on time with parking valet as an option but they have parking for everyone.
I was allowed to enter with 2 persons as long the waiting room was not packed, its really a very open waiting area with comfortable seating with seats empty for covid rules. I was checked in and registered and called in by 11:45am Surgery started at about 1:20pm, but I do not recall as I was already starting on the IV with meds. After surgery the nurses were very attentive and showed concerned, it really was a great experience it takes a lot of the anxiety away of being at a hospital. p.s. There is a Starbucks next door, literally walk over, for those coming with to wait.

Island Eye had the most pleasant staff! Everyone we met was super helpful and caring - from the front desk to the check in person to the anesthesiologist to all the nurses. The facility is state of the art and has a comfortable waiting area for family. There was only one thing that needs improvement - the transportation company they use for patients who require it could be better. Both the morning and afternoon drivers were late. Hopefully, they can find a better transportation company.

Unfortunately my experience was very stressful Nov. 2021. My Dr. was brilliant BUT.the wait from early morning till afternoon, 4 hrs later they took me to "pre-op", another 2 hrs till surgery! Seeing many patients that came after me go before me was unbearable, no one had answers. So thinking would only spend a few hours there, was over 8 hrs! I have Medicare and a very good supplement, and still have to pay $1,000 out of pocket! Plus over $1,600 for the facility, but to be fair they did advise me of that expense, fortunately my other eye does not have any issues. DO RESEARCH PEOPLE!

I found the staff to be pleasant and fine. I was told to come in at 2:30. Thankfully, the waiting room was relatively empty especially during Covid. I was brought into the pre surgical area about 2:45 and just sat there for quite some time. Finally brought into surgical room and waited at least 45 minutes for the Doctor to come in The surgery took about 15 minutes.
Now I really don't have any complaints, but I think a better idea is to have greater coordination with surgeon so patients don't have to sit around anxiously waiting Overall my experience was okay. About 3 hrs. long

BEWARE -They do not let family members/escorts in the waiting room. And they do not tell you in advance! They claim due to covid but I am fully vaccinated but they make no exceptions. You must wait in your car outside in the parking lot for 5 hours or more because as you have read the other reviews they make you wait forever. (The waiting room was not full either).
So make sure you are aware of this. There is nothing open at 6 am so bring a full charged phone or a long book while you wait uncomfortably in the car. The day I waited it was 95 degrees.

I had cataract surgery in May at this facility. I was very apprehensive about going there bc I read awful reviews about waiting for hours, very unfriendly, unprofessional staff members and overall not being treated or taken care of in a very good manner. I found this to be very far from the truth. Everything was very organized and moved along at a good pace.
From start to finish I was.there for 2 hrs and 15 minutes. The staff was as friendly as a staff should be while performing their duties. They did their job.in a very professional manner. I had no negative issues with this surgical center. I will be having cataract surgery on the other eye very shortly at the same facility.

I drove several hours from out of state to NY to accompany my mother to her surgery. She was told it would take 3-4 hours but she was confused as to why since the first eye was done a few months earlier and she'd returned home in under 2 hours. Mom had booked the early morning appt since she was told to fast, so she figured she would do better first thing in the a.m.
We arrived about 30 minutes early to this appt. Since I could not come inside to wait, I sat outside in my car while Mom texted me that she was checked in immediately (yay) but then for an hour and a half after that, she was still waiting. Later, she told me that her usually normal blood pressure was *through the roof* because of the long unexplained wait.
About an hour into her wait, a woman came in and went right into surgery before Mom. When Mom asked the staff about that, she was told that the woman's appt time was scheduled before Mom's, so she was seen first! Never mind the fact that she was over one hour late! What disrespect to the other patients. At the 3+ hour mark, I called the office to check in on Mom's progress and was told they had no patient by that name checked in.
For the number of patients (lots of business) that I saw coming and going, Island Eye NEEDS to invest in its patient (and family) experience. While the actual surgery portion was fine and the orderlies were friendly, the several hour long wait just to get to that point plus honoring appt times for latecomers is INEXCUSABLE. Add to the fact that patients are without food or drink while they just sit there. Speaking for my mom, she feels devalued and uncared for and I do not recommend this surgical center. ** Island Eye, read these reviews and do your part to make this world a better place. **

Our excellent vitreoretinal surgeon, Jonathan Feistmann, chose Island Eye for emergency eye surgery on a family member when his primary affiliation, Mt. Sinai in Manhattan, was unable to accommodate us on short notice. Both the facility and the staff were entirely professional. Like other reviewers, we experienced some delays; unlike others, we found communication to be good.
In any case, I urge patients to consider that this is a surgical center, not a day spa. They are trying to preserve or restore your loved one's sight; an extra 60 minutes is a small price to pay.

My mother had an appointment here yesterday. She was given an early morning time and was told to arrive a little early. Well she sat there waiting for three hours and did not get her 5 minute eye surgery until after 1:00. She said the waiting room was filled with patients all angrily waiting. They were not given any type of explanation as to why they were so behind.
She thinks the doctor didn't actually arrive until after 11:00 bc she saw him walk in. How could you give so many patients appointment times and then completely disregard them after they sat waiting for hours, wearing masks bc of Covid, with family members waiting outside in this heat in their cars!? What a horrible experience and what horrible staff for not giving anyone any explanations! I would suggest, if you are reading this, go to a different office.

I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes at Island Eye SurgiCenter. My experience with the surgeon, Dr. Jerry D'Aversa and the Center was extremely pleasant. The staff at the Center couldn't have been more helpful and comforting to my needs and the surgical outcome was excellent. Kudos to the Administrator and his team for their caring approach to my medical needs. I highly recommend this facility.

I would like to thank the entire staff for all their assistance on Thursday March 20, 2019. I had my left eye Cataract replaced. The entire staff made my stay pleasant as could be. There is one person that I must thank for going out of her way and making me as calm as I could be. That person is Aileen. She was such a pleasure to talk to and listen to.
She was with me the entire time and made sure I was okay. We talked about movies and such so as to relax me. You are truly lucky to have her as one of your staff members. I explained to her that I have terrible veins and she said don't worry I will find one on the first try. She sure did. I will ask one favor can someone please again say thank you to her for everything she did. Your office is very luck to have her as one of your staff members.

I drove my wife to Island Eye for a surgical procedure with Dr. Wong. There is ample parking and the facility is brand new. The waiting room is very comfortable and the place is sparkling clean. We were greeted warmly by the staff when we entered and the nurses were professional and efficient in the registration process. The staff made my wife feel very comfortable.
She was brought into the operating room on schedule and we were able to leave about two hours later. The nurses gave detailed discharge instructions and followed up later that day, as well as the next day. Overall, the facility is beautiful and modern, the nurses are efficient and caring, and most importantly, the operation and post-op were done perfectly!

Very impressed. I took my daughter today for surgery and from the moment we pulled into the parking lot until we left everyone was extremely professional and friendly. The facility is very clean and the process ran very smoothly. All of the staff and nurses were very effective in making my daughter feel comfortable and calm. One nurse by the name of Maura that saw my daughter after her procedure was an angel.
She had such a gift with people and Maura discharged my daughter with very thorough aftercare instructions. For a stressful and unpleasant procedure I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this professional and well kept facility to others needing eye surgery.

Today I went to the Center as a post op patient. The Center NEVER called about a time frame to see the Dr i was coming into see. Then i arrived and the receptionist was CURT. Told me to take a seat and she would tell the nurse manager I was here. Well she sat there until the Nurse Manager came out to talk to her. I did hear her tell the N.M. that i was waiting.
After about 1/2 I asked her if she could give me a time frame on the wait. Her answer was I told the N.M. she knows. THAT was NOT what I asked. She never gave me an answer. So I sat back down. My husband came in to ask how long? I had no idea. So the N.M. came out and she and the receptionist were talking NOT ONCE did she inform her that I was still waiting.
Then my husband went up to ask while the N.M. was still at the counter. In less then 5 minutes i was in the bac k having my small procedure done. In and Out NO THANKS to the receptionist. Terrible Customer Service.

This was a very good experience! Surgicenter was clean they were prompt and curtious! the results were beyond my expectations! I forgot what I was missing. The colors and brightness are amazing after looking out of a dirty windshield for years everything is crystal clear. Can't wait to have the other eye done!

This facility is as good as it gets. It is a beautiful building with a very comfortable (if not luxurious) waiting room, operating rooms, and recovery room. But more impressive than the physical features of the facility is the way it operates. Check-in was fast and efficient, staff members were kind, patient, and attentive to my needs, and the entire process of being there seemed to go smooth thanks to the professionalism of every person involved in my care. I will definitely be coming back here again should I need to. Top notch!

The center is new and nicely set up. The waiting are is nice with free wifi although the receptionist was not able to tell me the password (she insisted you didn't need one but it was locked and you did need one). Paperwork process was smooth and efficient. However, after a while a nurse told me to leave everything with my family member and come with her.
She rushed me into this holding area (pre-operating room area). This area had several patients and many workers (nurses I assume?). They all chatted constantly giving little attention to the patients. They joked, spoke of what they had for lunch, where they shopped last week, etc. I waited about an hour in this area so I have no idea why I was separated from my family member and made to sit alone.
As patients were wheeled off to surgery two guys who would be responsible to wheel them would say "I'll take that one" or "move that one" never calling us patients, just referring to "that one". Very cold and rude. The center needs to look at that area (the holding room) and get some decency and respect brought into it. This was my first surgery ever and to listen to them all hanging around and joking among themselves for an hour was nerve wracking. On the other hand, in the operating room with Dr. Wong and OR staff was a warm and comforting experience. Thank you Dr. Wong.
