Services
MPA was founded in 1953 by a group of independent clinicians in order to provide outstanding mental health services for Madison, Wisconsin and its surrounding communities. As the area's first free-standing psychiatric practice, MPA led the way in outpatient psychiatric care. Both clinicians and support staff continue this tradition today by dedicating themselves to improving the experience and well-being of our patients.
Our new patient process begins by talking with our Intake Coordinator. They will gather your contact information, insurance information, and a brief overview of the reason you are seeking services. This information is used to ensure we can find a clinician best suited to meet your needs with availability in their schedule for new patients.

I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the team at MPA West! My life is so much better since I started seeing Dr Smarrella, Heather and Renee Sehagian back in 2013. They are so caring and helpful. They are true heroes. Thank you for helping me see my purpose in life and for not letting me give up on myself when that was all I wanted to do I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place to anyone that needs help.

Do not recommend this agency. I can't speak for all the providers but the one I saw was dismissive and prescribed a medicine that should not have been prescribed on its own. Was not told how to access my online appointment and then was told they don't email patients due to HIPAA, even with general information, which is a ridiculous interpretation of the law.

I have been receiving psychiatric care since I was four years old, for 19 years now, and I have never had a provider who is as thoughtful and deliberate in his practice as Dr. Berendes. I leave every appointment feeling completely listened to, like my opinion and experience is equally as valid as any test or lab result would be. Every decision regarding my medications he makes in conjunction with me and takes as much time as needed to talk it over and discuss my concerns or worries.
Working through psychiatric disorders can be scary, and I am so grateful that some of that worry and fear is lifted by knowing that I have a reliable and intelligent provider to help me make the right choices. The support staff at MPA is also wonderful, from the receptionists, to billing, to the medical assistant. I couldn't recommend this practice enough, and one of my biggest worries about eventually moving out of Madison is how I will find a psychiatry clinic that will meet the incredibly high bar that MPA has set.

Absolute trash I have been trying to get my prescription refilled for over a week now I have a new appointment set and everything, even called the script line 3 times now but for some reason people are too busy messing around or something to get my script refilled. Do not recommend they are not taking my situation seriously what so ever.

Hi, I'm making this to ask if UHC is accepted as insurance and if I need need a referral from my regular doctor? I am having a hard time getting my current psychiatrist to listen to me on what may be wrong with me and its getting the point of wanting a new psych doctor. I believe I have "bipolar depression" just because of the amount of low to high episodes I have from days to weeks and sometimes month on end.
And the amount of irritability and racing thoughts I'm always getting that disrupt me from sleeping at times. I need help. I'm on desvenlaxine for depression but I just need a second opinion.

Have used the after hours line a couple of times to get refills because they only dole out medication amounts in one month at a time dosages so I have to continue to come in for appointments. This recently happened on a Friday night. Got a passive aggressive letter telling me not to use the after hours line for med refills, as it is for emergencies only.
Apparently their solution is to go off of my medication for three days or go to the emergency room. (The pharmacy will not give a temporary supply of controlled substances). I become very very sick (will spare the details but it is dangerous) when I am off medication and am not going to add a $1000 trip to the emergency room to my financial debt all because they don't want to pay the doctor on call to send in a refill which I should have had in the first place. Telling people who are suffering to go off of their meds, particularly meds they can't get without going to the emergency room, is unconscionable.
Also said they require seven days notice to refill a medication, and they won't give you a refill unless you have an appointment booked. If you don't have one booked, they deny your medication. With all of the different meds I'm on plus a recent diagnosis of something that affects my memory, it is very difficult for me to remember to call and request refills, particularly seven days out! Don't kid yourself, they are in it for the money. Patient care is waaaaaay below that on their priority list.

After taking my daughter to meet with many different people, I realized each was just as rude and inconsiderate as the next. The lack of care for their patients is sickening. I would like to personally call out Dr. Atit Desai for making my daughter even more uncomfortable with therapy sessions. This place is horribly run and disgusts me. I will never recommend this place.
