Our developmental approach to vision care places special emphasis on visual skills testing (eye teaming, eye movement control, and focusing) because difficulties in these areas often affect classroom and work performance. We provide effective treatments for visual problems of patients with Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning/Reading Problems, and Visual Perceptual Problems such as reversals in reading and writing.
You will see our caring attitude reflected in the thoroughness of our evaluations and in the extra time we spend answering your questions, informing you about your visual condition and in discussing all the treatment alternatives that are available.

Dr. Ken Westcott has been helping children and adults in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia meet their visual needs for over 20 years. He received his Doctorate in Optometry from the Ohio State University where he focused his clinical training on Child and Vision Development. His practice provides vision therapy to patients who range in complexity from computer Eyestrain and learning-related vision problems to patients with autism, strabismus (eye-turns), and amblyopia (lazy eye), or those who have suffered a concussion, traumatic, or acquired brain injury.
Some visual conditions cannot be treated adequately with just glasses, contact lenses and/or patching, and are best resolved through a program of Vision Therapy. Vision Therapy is an individualized, supervised, treatment program designed to correct visual-motor and/or perceptual-cognitive deficiencies.
Dr. Westcott enjoys and appreciates working with teachers and other professionals on a regular basis. With the permission of our patients and parents, we are happy to coordinate care so that our patients can be as successful as possible in their treatment. If you are a teacher or other professional looking to refer a new patient, we would love to connect with you over the phone to discuss your patient's needs.

I have a "lazy eye that I have always been very self consious about. I saved every extra cent I had so I could complete a course of Vision Therapy. My insurance does not cover vision therapy so it ended up costing me over $4000.00. I attended weekly vision therapy sessions until my savings ran out. My vision therapist "Denise" said to me once "I can't believe your husband let's you spend all this money on vision therapy." But it was my money and I was determined.
Unfortunately vision therapy did not help, as I still have the lazy eye. In hindsight it would have been cheaper if I had just bought a pair of dark glasses to hide my lazy eye. I finished vision therapy feeling extremely disappointed.

Every time I go into DVC, the whole office staff greets me with a friendly waive and a heart-warming smile. After the short wait to go see Dr. Westcott, my experience can only be described as remarkable. The care, patience, and wisdom that he shares with his patients is unmatched by any doctor I have ever seen. Dr. Westcott and his staff can only be described as family at this point. 100 percent worth the wait!

I wish I could give this business 1,000 stars! Dr. Westcott developed a Vision Therapy Treatment Plan for me that resolved my lifelong struggle with double vision resulting in greatly improved reading efficiency (jumped up 6 levels!) and largely minimized headaches, fatigue, and eyestrain. Vision Therapists Denise and Katherine were incredibly skilled in helping me learn, implement, and practice my weekly home assignments. I am thankful beyond words for the comprehensive expertise that Dr. Westcott provided throughout the whole process and highly recommend Developmental Vision Care!

I wish Dr Wescott was cloned. We drive 3 hours round trip every Friday for therapy. Long story very short it was by the grace of God our paths crossed through referrals and I don't want to imagine where my son would be without him. He's intuitive. Extremely patient. And feel like he really cares about my son getting better. He's honest even if the answer isn't something he can help with (referrals to OT or other needs).
Thank you to all the friendly staff and caring therapists too! For those with insurance concerns: Insurance can sometimes be an issue but with a little research and some phone calls I was able to figure out how insurance can cover most of it.

I cannot say enough good things about Developmental Vision Care. Dr. Wescott and his staff (We especially loved Ms. Julie and Ms. Annemarie) changed my child's life. All along we knew that our daughter was bright - but there were big issues in reading and writing. A school psychologist had heard Dr. W speak and suggested I looked into vision therapy. Dr. W gave my daughter a very thorough examination and recommended eye therapy.
We don't live in Chesapeake - we live in the Outer Banks - but we drove up weekly for a year and a half - completely worth it. My daughter is reading on grade level and doing well in school. Dr W. and Julie taught my daughter to take ownership of her learning and her vision correction. As a teacher, watching this process was fascinating and I hope the practice of eye therapy becomes mainstream, because it truly was a game changer for my daughter - and our family!

As a former elementary school teacher & home school mom, I highly recommend Dr. Westcott's practice for diagnosing and treating vision/reading problems. I heard him speak at HEAV with a passionate desire to help children like my daughter. She read with incredible difficulty at age eight.skipping words and lines, seeing double & having headaches. They successfully diagnosed and treated her for a year in fun ways. The staff is professional and caring. My daughter's eyesight is fixed, & she reads beautifully! Our family thanks the Lord for them.

Dr. Westcott and his team are incredible people and incredible professionals. They helped me during a difficult time, while I was searching for a diagnosis. He was the first doctor to suggest my vision issues were caused by a brain problem, which ended out being the underlying problem. They are very thorough with testing and re-evaluate the vision therapy plan to ensure it is making a difference in the patient's vision. His office was very flexible with my schedule as I attended school out of town. I can't say enough wonderful things about this office!

I knew there was something wrong with my son's eyes, and when I was brushed off by his eye care provider, I called a friend who's daughter had significant vision problems treated by Dr. Westcott and staff. From my first hesitant phone call I was met with kindness, information, and expertise. My son had amblyopia as well as very poor acuity and a multitude of other issues.
We recently graduated from weekly therapy and I can't describe the difference, not just with his vision, but in the entire child. He can see, he can read, he does jigsaw puzzles, he can walk on curbs, he can ride a bike. Moreover, he has learned that he had a problem but that with hard work and determination he fixed it. He is fearless now. The staff here is the perfect mix of personal and professional.
They know us, they care about us, not just as a patient, but our whole family. If you even think that your child or other family member has vision problems, or if they have learning challenges that you can't find another source for, go ahead and make an appointment. I can confidently say that my son's life and future was changed by our time with Developmental Vision Care.
