We reviewed our out-patient experience, at our privately-owned surgical center, performing a one and two level Transforaminal Interbody Fusion (TLIF) over a seven year period of time. We found an average length of stay of 17.37 hours at the facility. Time to ambulation was an incredible 3.75 hours with only three patients requiring an overnight stay at a local rehab center.
Spinal discs are comprised of a tough fibrous outer layer (annulus fibrosis) and a water and protein mixture (nucleus pulposus). When the fibrous outer layer undergoes a significant trauma or deteriorates due to overuse, small tears can occur causing the fluid to leak out of the disc. This is referred to as an annular tear or a disc tear.
Degenerative Disc Disease is not a specific condition but rather a term used to describe the degenerative process the spinal discs may undergo as a result of injury or the aging process. Degenerative Disc Disease occurs when the intervertebral disc loses the fluid within the disc that allows for flexibility of the disc.
A spinal fracture is considered one of the worse injuries one can suffer and is often referred to as a "broken back". The most common incidence of spinal fractures result from accidents or sudden traumatic injuries. Elderly patients are also more likely to experience this condition as a result of osteoarthritis of the spine.

Dr. Vessa saved my life. 20 years ago at the age of 32, my back problems made life unbearable. Could hardly walk, couldn't being my feet for long and the amounts of medication being taken for pain wouldn't be good for anyone's liver. Dr. Vessa is the best doctor ever. Diagnosed me with complete accuracy by doing simple test with no equipment. Then followed up with MRI that confirmed everything with pin point accuracy. Dr. Vessa is an extremely knowledgeable, dedicated, hard working physician. He gets to the root of the problem, and is dedicated to treating the patient as a whole. I couldn't have asked for a better experience than that with Dr. Vessa. From the first appointment, I knew he "knew his stuff" and I felt comfortable immediately knowing that I was in good hands. I have been seeing orthopedic doctors for 40 years now (scoliosis as a child). By far, Dr Vessa is the best doctor, even compared to the "star doctors". I was in extreme pain and my life was on hold, Dr. Vessa. talk to me and my wife and he explained what the problem was, but he had to run some tests and an MRI to be sure. Dr. Vessa explain to us what the problem was and in simple details so I could really understand what was going to and he also explain what I needed to do. My trust is 100% in Dr. Vessa and in Late Jan 2012 he operated and it was a success.
