Hyperparathyroidism is a disease that is underrecognized, underdiagnosed, and undertreated. It is typically manifest as a slight elevation in your calcium level, and your doctor might even overlook it, maybe not even aware themselves of how big.

DeKalb Surgical Associates offers evaluation and surgical treatment for numerous conditions. To provide our patients with the highest quality surgical care available, our practice is limited to the evaluation and treatment of general surgical conditions. If you do not have a primary care physician, we will gladly refer you to someone for your non-surgical needs.
We ask that you please give us a 24-hour notice if you cannot make a scheduled appointment. General surgery, by its very nature, must deal with a variety of urgent or emergency situations, making it difficult to maintain a strict appointment schedule. If your appointment is delayed due to another patient's emergency, we will do our utmost to minimize any inconvenience to you. Payment for office visits and services is expected at the time of your visit unless your insurance plan contracts otherwise.
DeKalb Surgical Associates takes pride in keeping their patients informed on their surgical needs and treatment. Just had surgery or want to know what to expect after surgery? DeKalb Surgical Associates provides a handy reference for the typical questions that arise during the post-operative period.
Mammogram films usually provided on a disk (breast patients only) (make sure mammogram report is included with the films). Complete all health information via the patient portal or manually fill out all new patient paperwork. When you first make an appointment with our office, you will receive an email invitation to register on our Patient Portal where you may electronically enter all your pertinent medical information. If you fill this out in advance, it will make your office visit go quicker. Please be complete and accurate.

From the beginning Dr. Kennedy's staff was very helpful, pleasant and informative. I had been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and was told to just wait and see. I had fatigue, shortness of breath, constipation joint pain and just felt awful. After my own research I found out the only correction for my condition was surgery, it would not get better on it's own with time, just worst.
I saw Dr. Kennedy and he said I was a candidate for surgery, which was scheduled the next week. Boy am I glad I had the surgery, I felt better the next day and now 4 weeks out I feel better than I have in the last 2 years. I would highly recommend him and the surgery center. So glad I found him

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. John Kennedy for many years. He has taken very good care of us and so far has preformed 1 surgery for my husband who had colon cancer and 2 surgeries for myself one for colon resection due to diverticulitis and one for breast cancer. I am so glad to have had Dr. Kennedy for those surgeries and how well I have been because of them.
I am now 8 years cancer free from Breast Cancer and thanks to his recommendation to have the onco dx test I did not have to have chemotherapy, just radiation. My husband has been cancer free for many years, I believe it was in 1998 he had his colon cancer surgery. Dr. Kennedy performed my double mastectomy 7 years ago. My experience with him and his staff has ALWAYS been professional, respectful, and caring. I never felt rushed nor that that my questions were unimportant. I am filled with gratitude and I am thankful for Dr. Kennedy and his amazing team. His office is a good example of outstanding care in customer service.

Dr. Kennedy was recommended by the Breast Cancer Center at Emory Dekalb when I first met with their nurse navigator. Learned even before my first visit that he is also the MD for a number of neighbors. They all had great things to say about him. He put me at ease from the beginning; asked a lot of questions about me and my health care needs, and listen closely to my concerns.
I'm now 5 years post surgery, and doing great. His staff has been welcoming and easy to reach when I have questions between appointments, and Dr. Kennedy calls me back promptly. I have and will continue to refer friends and neighbors to him. It helps that his office is less than a mile from my home, and in the same building as the Wellness Center gym. There is also a weekly cancer support group in that building, that really helped with my education and stress level.

I had a wonderful experience with DeKalb Surgical Associates. There seems to be a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there among medical professionals concerning hyperparathyroidism, and DeKalb Surgical Associates did an excellent job of explaining everything in great detail and answering any and all questions I had, as well as making me feel confident and comfortable with trusting them for my surgery.
The entire process was well managed and I felt that they were very attentive to my needs as far as scheduling my consultation and surgery, since I was coming from out of town and also had to coordinate child care. Dr. Kennedy is extremely knowledgeable but also kind and compassionate. He was recommended to me by a local friend who is also a doctor.
My surgery and recovery went very well and Dr. Kennedy also followed up with me after surgery. I would (and do every chance I get) recommend him and DeKalb Surgical Associates to anyone who needs parathyroid surgery!

Dr. John S Kennedy performed my surgery in October, 2018. He is one of the best surgeons I have ever met. One of my friends recommended him. On my pre op appointment he was extremely detailed about the whole procedure and explained everything. He did an excellent job with my Surgery and He healed me. Even after my surgery I had to call him and I was able to contact him very easily and he was wonderful and very helpful. If u need a Parathroid surgery I would highly recommend dr. Kennedy. I first went to Dr. Kennedy about 20+ years ago to remove a benign growth on my scalp. He was referred to me by my primary care physician. When I got the report that I had a questionable mammogram my ob/gyn also referred me to Dr. Kennedy. I also know a group of ladies that go to his church. They all recommended him. I know other patients of his also.
I got nothing but rave recommendations. My own personal experience was excellent. I was always treated very professionally and kindly. I had a lumpectomy and I was very pleased with the results. Dr Kennedy is following me for 5 years to assure that if cancer shows up again we will be right on top of it.

Dr. Kennedy and ALL his staff have a very caring heart for their patients. They care about what is best for you. Both surgeries went well and I had an awesome experience.surrounded by positiveness for a great outcome through both surgeries. My father (80 years old ) also had a tumor removed from his face which was a success and my parents both say, " Dr. Kennedy is a very caring doctor.he listens to you and takes care of any questions or problems he may go through." We love the positive attitudes they display! Thanks for all you do!
