I recently was hospitalized at Mary Greeley Hospital. The doctor I had didn't take care of having my care looked at by another doctor when other problems were found. I let the doctor & nurses I had appointments at McFarland clinics. I was told it would be taken care of It was not. I did not see any of the doctors. Once the cr scan showed the numbness problem was coming from the spine problem I have I still saw no one else.
One of the missed appointment was with orthopaedics The hospital does need to have the nurses who start I V' s need trained better. There was two older nurses who have a bad attitude who probably need to retire. If you unfortunately get Steph & Wanda ask for someone else to start an I V. I made sure the problem was mentioned to the right people. I plan to go to my vascular doctor's at Mayo clinics in Rochester. At times like the recent hospital stay I have little choice of where to go.

I was here 2 weeks ago to have my little man everything was good and some of the staff were super helpful and nice with the labor and delivery. We are now back 2 weeks later due to the fact that he wasn't making weight since birth, and still here and no communication has been made for anything! And also love how I get my meals for free due to the fact that I am the mother, but the father should too even if they don't have the money to pay for said meal so now I have to deal with a very upset husband.
I was also told that I am in charge of the care of my son since I have to think and make it like I would if taking him home and nobody wants to listen to my suggestions or support my decisions., over this and just want to go home

Great hospital but disappointing billing practices. Processed then refunded our payments every few months over the last couple of years, and then sent three small (under $200 total) bills to collections. I've paid repeatedly, but they continued to return our money because of the way they process invoices. This should not have happened.

I'll give this hospital - 5 due to the young spoiled blonde nurses not all nurses but the young ones are rude do not know what they are doing. The doctors are OK I'm going to look up every nurse who felt cute disrespecting me on my charts she wrote 3 pages how awful I am for her entertainment. The nurse got ANGRY and stormed out the room because I denied the option of more needles she literally huff and puffed and stormed out.
Then this training nurse took 1hour to find my vein in emergency. They have no idea what there doing. Some nurses some are great! I think they hire young nurses and they're all having a sex orgy at this hospital thee worst hospital I wi never go back gonna find exact names and post everywhere since she wanna be cute. Do not go to this hospital

I highly recommend this ER. They took my symptoms seriously unlike Story County ER. I came to the ER with obvious signs of serious neurological problems. They coded me as a possible stroke, gave me an MRI, and did every action necessary to stabilize me and solve the mystery of why I couldn't speak, see, or walk properly, even though I was uninsured.
The nurse wiped my tears and calmed me while I cried in the MRI. Her kindness probably made me cry even more, because I had been treated so poorly before. I firmly believe that this ER saved my life by being compassionate and professional. They consulted specialists to get a firm diagnosis and treated me so that I could begin healing. They got me referred to a specialist who can help me get life long treatment for my incurable illness. Additionally, their financial aid department helped me get income based charity care so I didn't have to pay the very high bill.
I went to the ER terrified and not knowing why my brain had stopped working and I left with an answer and a plan for treatment. How I was treated at Mary Greeley ER has left a significant impression on me. This hospital ER truly cares about saving peoples lives and providing compassionate care. Thank you Mary Greeley for saving me.

I was asked to remove my review but I don't feel like I should remove it but I will update and explain more as to my reason to feel the way I do. I did remove the nurse who was the one who set me over the edge with the way she attacked me. Tuesday July 27th 2021 per orders from my terminally ill dads doctor he was admitted he to Mary Greeley 5th floor cancer unit.
The staff was caring but short handed. My dad had to wait longer then he should for cares. They was reusing the same mouth swabs that they left in the cup of water. My cousin who is a hospice nurse wrote a note on the white board not to reuse them. She also requested a social worker meet with us. Several times I had to track down nurses. My dad has surgery on Thursday.
They came in the room at 5:30-am to get him ready. I was asking questions as to time line and no one knew. At 7 someone came and got him to take him to surgery no information provided. I asked if we was supposed to go to wait in the operating room. Was told to stay in the room. Hour later the phone in my dads room rang. My brother answered the lady on the other end refused to speak to him.
My dad had already stated that he wants all 3 of his kids to be involved and make decisions. I spoke the the lady on the phone. Little bit later a nurse comes in tells us we have to leave his room they need it and we needed to go to ICU waiting room. Was never told where exactly we were going just that it was on 2nd floor. We found where we were to be. Hours go by.
Never updated. Didn't hear anything. My cell phone rang and it was an Ames # so I answered. It was the surgeon Dr Taylor. He asked where I was that he couldn't find me and had been trying for an hour. I explained we was kicked out of dads room on 5th send to ICU waiting room and no one spoke to us. He explained what he done. He is a very great surgeon.
Dad has to stay in ICU. We was never given the hours or any information on what to expect. The first night the nurse kicked me out of his room because it was after visiting hours. I was ok with the rules but not ok because they were never explained. Dad was very scared and requested not being left alone but his request wasn't answered. I waited all night in the waiting room until 8am to see him. 2nd night I made sure to leave at 8 against his request but let him know I would be in the waiting room they could come get me if he was too scared.
I felt there was several medical staff involved in his care but not quite on the same page. I understand the severity of his condition. Last night was the situation that set me over the edge. Without knowing exact rules for ICU I went to the waiting room to look for my sons wallet he left behind. A nurse, not my dads nurse flung open the door like she was part of the swat team and spoke to me very rude and demanded to know how I got in here because this is a locked unit she demanded I don't do it again.
I spoke to dads nurse who was amazing. Dads direct care nurses have been great. They have been tentative. Karissa, Ian, Regain from fort Dodge and his nurse from Ankeny have been the very best.

My mother was recently hospitali, hospitalized, and passed away after being transfered to hospice. Our stay while she was in the hospital was pretty great. I would recommend letting ICU patient families know about the 1 discounted family tray from the cafeteria because when a loved one is there for extended times it is very expensive. Also the rental places for out of town family members to stay, most people don't think of things like this when a loved one is dying. Thank you for your amazing staff and great hospitality though.

We had our first baby at Mary Greeley Birthways and we were so happy with our experience! I saw Dr. Zoulek throughout my pregnancy and she was able to deliver him. Dr. Z was wonderful in educating us, answering our questions without judgement, and reassuring. I could really tell she loves her job and cares for her patients. The nurses in Birthways were phenomenal.
They were so encouraging throughout my entire time at the hospital. They were supportive of my husband and taught us so much in our time there. My labor and delivery nurses were very attentive while I was in labor and were cheerleaders while I was pushing. The rest of the nurses after delivery were so kind and inclusive. They explained everything that was going on with our baby and taught us the basics.
I also loved that the hospital is baby friendly. Our baby had at least two hours of skin to skin before anything else. There are several resources dedicated to helping moms learn how to breastfeed. Though we are moving away, we are heavily considering making the drive to go through our next pregnancy with Dr. Z and Mary Greeley. I cannot fully express how wonderful they were. Thank you!

There's a reason townspeople call this hospital "Murder Greeley". They've let people walk out of the E.R. with nearly stroke level blood pressure or without final vital readings. I've heard both positive and negative reviews of the birthing center and OB/GYN staff. The E.R. staff have gone through the belongings of transpeople and laughed at their gender affirming personal items - to where the transperson could hear it. It's a hit or miss on the level of care received here.

Our 18 yr old daughter is a college student in Ames. She was very sick with a temperature of 103.9, a sore throat and chest pains. She went to the ER and was given an IV with fluids, she wasn't advised of what was given, she was calm and quiet just feeling very sick. The ER doctor gave her Haldol, which is used as an anti-psycotic, we are not sure why she was given it.
The next day she had a reaction, it is referred to as a dystonia reaction; her face, hand and neck muscles were contorted and stiff she was drooling, she couldn't talk right, her pulse was racing she was in emence pain, and she was scared to death! Never once did the Doctors at Mary Greeley warn her that this could happen! We ended up in another ER to counteract the drug. The new ER didn't understand why she was treated with Haldol. Mary Greeley never took responsibility.

I was in the cardiac wing (4th floor) and had the best nurses ever: Pamela, Pauline, etc. I was in great pain and they helped me every time the pain returned (catheter, bleeding, etc.) The techs were spectacular and everybody was professional even wheeling me down for an ultra-sound. The food was delicious and "out of this world" (Mary Greeley has a new chef and the oatmeal was as good as their multigrain pancakes (breakfast 24 hours), lunch and dinner menus were superb (especially the salmon in wine sauce, the pork cutlet and the orange-roughy. Unfortunately, the cod was so small it would not feed an adult.
There was a large choice of vegetables (I gravitated to the sauteed zucchini and squash) but the puddings were commercial and tasted flat. I really did not want to leave, but they doctors (especially Berryhill and Amin) made even this cardiac patient "well" in record time. Mary Greeley Medical Center is the best in the Midwest.

One of the obstetrics nurses, while WORKING AT YOUR FACILITY THAT EVENING, on the evening shift gave my address to a hate group, and they ended up stalking me for nearly two years. As an RN, T.K.H. Should have done better and not done this. I ended up having to change my phone number THREE TIMES IN ONE YEAR, because of her horrid act. I was a donor to the cancer center BEFORE said incident, but won't be donating ever again.
I received three death threats from T.K.H.'s hate group, unwanted mailings and unordered pizzas. And yet, the police could do nearly nothing about this case. Since the death threats were coming from different states, they told me to call them if any of the hate group showed up on my property. One of the threats was by gun from someone in Chicago area. Too close for comfort. Until Mary Greeley Medical Center enacts some sort of social media responsibility contract for their employees, I cannot recommend service there.

I suppose it would not be good form if I were to write a bad review about the hospital where I was born. They tore down the wing of my birth, however, so here goes an unbiased review. A municipally owned facility, the hospital has undergone significant improvements over the years and Is currently in the midst of a major renovation. The new rooms are on a par with some of the best hospitals in the country.
The same can be said for recently added technological capabilities. Some complex health issues will no doubt still require treatment is Des Moines or Rochester or beyond, but Ames residents are fortunate to have Mary Greeley for most of their health needs.
