I want to counter the really pretty awful string of reviews about Doctor Friedman. Granted he isn't very warm or touchy-feely, but he is intelligent and professional and he answered all of my questions at length - he was very prompt. But you have to be prepared to ask those questions. If you don't ask, he won't volunteer- he's not a natural teacher.
The office was humming along on time, the front office was very courteous, efficient and friendly. That may have been the trouble in the past - as doctors are sometimes judged on how well the front office is functioning, which is obviously a mistake. If the front office is dysfunctional, the doctors are judged on this despite their professional abilities. That's a shame. Granted, I didn't have any surgical procedures done today, but he did efficiently address my medical issues and as I said answered all my questions. He also takes Medicare.

I had a terrible experience here. I called ahead and set up an appointment for an eye exam and to get fitted for contacts. Only half way through the appointment did they tell me that their contact person was on vacation. They dilated my eyes so severely that I told them I'd call them to set up an appointment for when she was back from vacation.
I called them to set up an appointment with her and they told me that she no longer works there. I had already used my one optometry visit that my insurance covers on that appointment and ended up having to go elsewhere to get fitted for contacts and had to pay for both an eye exam and contact fitting which were then not covered by my insurance. Extremely dissatisfied.

I had I surgery with the doctor when his office was still in downtown Monterey and it seem to go well enough. That was a number of years ago and I am just now getting back to the eye doctor. When I got the text for the confirmation of my appointment it didn't say the doctors name or what time or day the appointment was it just said to call so when I called the number and told the office that the text they sent out for appointments doesn't identify when the appointment is or what time or what office or anything she totally blew me off.
Very minor but it was a red flag. I got to the office about five minutes before my appointment time and had to fill out all the paperwork like I was a brand new patient which is fine it's been a couple of years but the office is so busy and there were so many patients going in and out I started to become a little concerned about my appointment time showing up about 25 minutes later I just got up and walked out I don't think the office really cared maybe this will help them stay on time but they just looked very very overbooked.
When I got back to the car I started to write this review and then I noticed all of the other reviews and it really made me feel like I made the right decision to find another doctor. I've been wearing correct of lenses for well over 40 years and I have never in my life heard about this refractive fee or whatever. I think the doctor himself seems pretty nice but no thanks I don't really want to be just a number

Completely Unacceptable Event! After searching providers for VSP on their website, we found Friedman Eye Care. We called and spoke with receptionist, explained that we had VSP, made an appt. nearly a week prior. Showed up to the appt. early to fill out necessary paperwork. Was notified that I would not be able to be seen with HMO coverage unless I had insurance approval, which requires a referral from my primary care physician.
These are things that I understand are part of the process, having HMO Medical Coverage. But upon making an appt. certain questions should be asked in regards to your particular type of Medical Coverage. Took an unpaid day off of work, which cost me $800. Unable to get same day appt. anywhere else, I am going to have to take another day off. Friedman Eye Care and their poor Customer Service cost me money. I hope that people see this post and think twice about this company.

I made a huge mistake in trusting this doctor for my cataract surgery! All he cares about is how quickly he can deal with you, he promises results that do not happen, and then blames your eyes for the unsuccessful surgery. He does not care that the surgery was unsuccessful. What he cares about is money! I agreed with his recommendation for spending a large amount of money for a lens that would allow me to use my right eye for closeup reading, and the left eye would be a regular lens at no extra cost.
After an excruciatingly painful surgery on my right eye, my eye now has extremely limited "out of focus" vision and definitely is no help for reading anything. I experience headaches and extreme eye strain in both eyes while I try to read with "readers" he suggested, and I will now have to get new bifocals and hope they work with a right eye that does not work at all.
I now have to use a magnifying glass to see up-close. He has made all sorts of excuses why the surgery was not successful. If he had not been so upbeat and totally positive with his recommendation, I would never have spent the extra money required for the special lens. He even disputed the fact what results were agreed upon. This doctor is full of charm, but beware, and "get it in writing!" Better yet, stay away from him!

Would give zero stars if I could! My family & I will NEVER be returning! First, there is a $100 "refraction fee" on top of the $205 exam fee. That is madness! I've worn glasses for 15 years and contacts for 4 and let me tell you I have never paid more than $90 flat at costco. Just wait, it gets even better! They wanted to charge me an EXTRA $100 for a contact fitting! What?
That would make my total $405 just for a prescription?! When I asked Friedman about it, he said things like "It's just business" like he didn't even care about me only about the money. When I ordered contacts online the Friedman eye center refused to cooperate with them and they refused to give them my prescription. They left a voicemail saying that I HAD to buy my contacts at their center. That is ILLEGAL. Luckily, I was able to get a hold of my old eye doctor so I could order contacts. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. It is all a SCAM.

Dr. Friedman has cared for my sight with skill and expertise. And my eyes are complicated. I've been a patient of Dr. Friedman for his entire career in the Monterey Peninsula. My whole family has and we all have the same or near same complications. I wouldn't go anywhere else. His staff is courteous and helpful. Thank you.

I was in a hurry to get contacts and glasses before a vacation and Sandra made it all happen with courtesy and professionalism. The doctor was very knowledgeable about my vision, and was flexible in giving me what I needed, too. I was very impressed with the extensive and classy selection of frames at Friedman Eye Center. OUTSTANDING! They have a great technician who adjusted 2 pair of my glasses to perfection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I've trusted my eyes to Dr. Friedman for going on 20 years, first with glasses, then Lasik surgery and recently for cataracts in both eyes. He "nailed" the surgeries first time each time, no tuneups needed. Staff is friendly and well-trained; all options are explained and weighed according to individual need.

I have been a patient of Dr. Friedman for several years. While I have not had any laser surgery, I have been fitted for glasses and contact lenses by him and his staff. I see great! Dr. Friedman makes sure that the prescription is right on, and his well run staff and optical shop made sure that the glasses and contacts were delivered in a timely fashion. I would definitely recommend him to my friends and family.

I have been going to Dr. Friedman's office for many years and had PRK with him. He's great and a good physician. His office manager and Norma, the billing person, are horrible. They immediately become defensive when you ask questions. They make no effort to listen to the patient and they are not willing to work for the patient and insurance limitations.
They say that the diagnosis is the diagnosis and don't try to work within insurance limitations to access insurance reimbursement and ease the burden on patients. After 7 years, they have now lost me as a patient and will never return there.

Gotta agree with DJG here. Horrible experience for months, and I felt like he was almost clueless about my problem or that I was his annuity. Finally went to another doctor and was fine within days. Your eyes are really important, I wouldn't trust them to someone you don't feel comfortable with. The five star review above smells like one posted by a relative or employee. And by someone who needs to learn that written defamation is called libel, not slander, and in any case, stated opinions are neither.
