Families are increasingly choosing to have their babies in the safety and privacy of their own home, or in a home-like setting such as a birth center. At Northern Sun, we offer a unique blend of mainstream medical therapies with naturopathic midwifery care. Our families can continue to receive care after the birth, much like an old-time general family practice.
The Birth Center at Northern Sun is located in the historic district of Topsham, Maine. The family room allows guests to be present and involved, while the bedroom provides privacy to the mother in labor. The birth tub in the birth suite is available for both laboring and birthing. The kitchen allows families to make their own food during their stay and eat and drink throughout labor.

The Northern Sun Family is excellent at making you feel cared for as a person, not just as a patient. I've been using their services since 2008 for home birthing, infant and maternal care, pediatrician services, and family health. Everything concern we come in with is met with a variety of solutions. We've never been disappointed!

Right when COVID began, I was still going to a hospital for my appointments, but when they told me that I had to only have one person in the room when I gave birth, I knew I wanted a home birth with my family. I was a 17 year old, single mom, and I knew I couldn't do it with only one person in the room. I needed my mom, my sisters and my brother. I found Sarah and her team shortly after I decided I wanted a home birth and went in for my first appointment.
I knew from the minute I met her that I wanted her to deliver my baby. She was so welcoming and not judgmental at all and fully supported me and my decisions. I wanted a water birth and when I saw the birth suite, I KNEW that was where my baby was going to be delivered. It felt like home and it was the most comfortable place I had been since I found out I was pregnant. Sarah made such a huge impact on my entire pregnancy and my life.
She talked me through everything and even had zoom classes about certain topics. I knew she cared way more than anyone did at the hospital. I told her my biggest fear of my pregnancy and she told me she would make sure that didn't happen, and she in fact did not break that promise to me. Everything and anything I had questions on she let me ask and never told me it was stupid.
I talked to her about my past and about very personal things that I had never talked to anyone but my mom about. She is the best midwife I have ever heard of in my life. She delivered my sweet son on April 16, 2020 at 6:52pm. The last words I said before I had him was "I just want to hold him" and the second he was born, she let me pull him up on my chest from the water.
My mom was my birth partner the entire pregnancy and sat behind me in the tub. It was the most amazing experience and I know Northern Sun Family Healthcare is going to be where I deliver my future children. Thank you to Sarah and her team for making the end of my pregnancy, my labor and deliver, as well as postpartum the most amazing experience I had every imagined.

Northern Sun has served our family with incredibly knowledgeable, kind, gracious, and caring primary care services for more than 14 years. There is no other provider who is more knowledgeable and trusted, not just for midwifery care, but for true HEALTHcare throughout life. When the mainstream medical model put our health and the life of myself and then our son in jeopardy, Dr. Ackerly was the one to save him.
When our concerns were dismissed by other providers, Dr. Ackerly dug in and found the answers. For each of our three subsequent pregnancies and births, we were supported by compassionate and knowledgeable providers who trusted my maternal instincts and always addressed our concerns. We, and our children, truly would not be thriving and healthy today if it weren't for the care we have received at Northern Sun.

Dr. Alicia is kind and caring. She always listens attentively to my health concerns and addresses each one thoughtfully. She does not give up when health issues are persistent and hard to treat. She is knowledgeable about many different health conditions, and she respects the fact that patients want to be actively involved in their own care. She is truly a gem, and I am so glad that I found her!

I am deeply grateful for Dr. Sarah and her team at Northern Sun. They are wonderful people who are very knowledgeable in their expertise. They have been with me for two pregnancies and births so far. My first born son died ten hours after he was born. And I am still so thankful to have been blessed with Dr. Sarah and her team during that time. They stayed with us the entire time in the hospital and came to visit many times afterwards and continuously checked in on our family throughout the following year.
And I know there is nothing different Dr. Sarah and her team could have done to change the outcome of his short life. When I got pregnant again a couple of years later I asked Dr. Sarah to accompany me once again during my home birth. Again, her team was amazing and I am deeply grateful for their help birthing my daughter (who is still alive and healthy)! They were very supportive and thorough. Woliwon (thank you) Sarah.

I would never want to go anywhere else for care for my family and self. True healthcare is practiced here, not just trying to manage symptoms with sick care. Issues are adressed holistically focusing on fixing the root cause. The Doctors take the time needed to listen to patients. Unlike places I've been to in the past where I might have talked to the Doctor for 2 minutes. Patients are involved in the decision making process as the Doctors understand individuals know there bodies best and there is not just one way to address illness.
You see the same Doctor every time so they really get to know you & your history. Other practices I've been to, I would see a different practitioner every time. I would highly recommend Northern Sun Family Healthcare.

I couldn't be more grateful that we found Northern Sun, I wish we found them sooner! They really care about their patients and provide such a great experience with every visit, especially for little ones who are nervous/shy at the doctors. The doctors are knowledgable and explain things so well. I finally feel empowered around our family's health thanks to Dr. Thomas. If you are looking for Naturopathic medical care, Northern Sun is hands down the best!

We had our Son at the Birthing Center in Topsham and Sarah was one of the Midwives present during his birth. The experiences from our first visit to now (he is 3 months old) have all been fantastic. Sarah and her staff are knowledgeable, personable, and very skilled at delivering babies. We were always very informed and presented with options. I value the relationship we have developed with her and look forward to our Son growing up with Sarah as his naturopathic pediatrician. I would, and have recommended Northern Sun to anyone.
