Breast cancers and benign breast abnormalities can mostly be detected when breast self-examination, physical examination by your health care provider and annual mammography are used together on a routine basis. It is normal for many women to have lumpy breasts, and the detection of an irregularity does not necessarily mean the presence of cancer.
DEXA stands for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. After the age of 35, most people will experience bone loss. However, for some women an increased loss of bone mass can result in fragile bones, physical deformity and pain, a condition known as osteoporosis. Bone densitometry or bone density testing is used to evaluate the degree of bone loss and can help you and your physician make decisions about your treatment. A bone density examination is used to assess the mass of the hips and spine to determine if bone loss is taking place.
A CT scan (aka CAT scan or computerized tomography) is an X-ray procedure that is enhanced by a computer. The results are 3-dimensional "slices" or scans through a body part showing bone and body tissue. Numerous scans are taken to make up a complete exam. A CT scan takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of scan needed.
