Dr. Barnhorst was a guest on a radio program discussing common causes of blindness and their prognosis as well as treatment and ongoing research. At Barnhorst Eye Associates, we're committed to delivering the finest in eye care to the Jacksonville community. We have achieved an established reputation within the N Florida community for our dedicated and professional approach to eye care.
Services
At the Barnhorst Eye & Laser Center's new Nocatee location, we offer a brand new, state-of-the-art LASIK and refractive surgery suite with the Wavelight Refractive Surgery Suite lasers. We perform the latest all-laser LASIK using the latest technology. LASIK Eye Surgery may be the best procedure for one individual while PRK or LASEK may be a more favorable procedure for another.
Would your career or business activities improve if you were to become less dependent on glasses and contacts? Over 98% of LASIK eye exam patients see 20/40 or better after surgery. The results of LASIK laser vision correction have been tremendous for literally millions of people. Despite the amazing safety and results of this procedure there are associated risks.
As a fellowship-trained cornea specialist, Dr. Barnhorst is on the leading edge of dry eye treatment. While doing his cornea fellowship training at the Eye and Ear Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Barnhorst worked with Dr. Gary Foulkes, one of the country's leading dry eye experts. Dry Eye Syndrome is a condition that occurs when there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye.
Dr. Barnhorst is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained cornea specialist. He has extensive knowledge and experience in several types of corneal surgeries and treatments. At Barnhorst Eye Associates, we provide the latest corneal techniques with proven, safe procedures for our patients to achieve the best long-term visual outcomes.
During traditional corneal transplant surgery (also known as Penetrating Keratoplasty or PKP), the unhealthy cornea is removed and a donor cornea is used as replacement. Small sutures hold the donor cornea in place while it heals and are gradually removed in the months following surgery. We are the cornea specialist in Jacksonville.

Today was my first visit to see Dr. Barnhorst. As a board certified physician, I'm quite particular and picky about the medical care I receive. Dr. Barnhorst was patient and thorough, and happily answered my numerous detailed questions. In short, his care was outstanding. The three other staff members with whom I interacted during my visit were professional and pleasant, and contributed to my overall top notch experience. In addition, the woman who assisted me in scheduling this appointment during a telephone call last week was excellent.

First, they did not recognize the appointment I had with them, even though I had an email confirmation from them. After that, even though they did not take my vision insurance, they confirmed that they could charge my health insurance for the eye exam, which I found a bit odd, but they insisted that this could be done. Finally, they send me a bill for (another) $225.
No idea where this charge comes from, maybe my health insurance company rejected their claim and now they try to get that money from me, even though they said it would only be a $20 copay. Pretty sure it is illegal to quote one price up-front, and then charge a different price after services have been provided. Update: Dr. Barnhorst called [himself] and explained how things must have progressed and where things went wrong.
I appreciate his call and he came across as an honest man. Still, there were things that could have been better; things like setting expectations, understand the customer's needs and situation (never worn glasses before) in order to provide a product that is useful to the customer. It is great using sophisticated machines to produce the perfect diagnosis. However, if that does not translate into a product that the customer can and/or want to use, it is to no avail.

Very happy with my eye care at Barnhorst. I really like Dr. Balo. She made some changes to my prescription and lens brand, which I've had for many years, and it was surprisingly for the better. For that, I will be a loyal patient of hers! All of the staff is incredibly nice here too. Beautiful facilities. Highly recommend.
