An epileptologist is a medical doctor (neurologist) who specializes in the treatment of epilepsy and seizures. An epilepsy doctor has expertise in seizure disorders, anti-epileptic medications, and other treatments (epilepsy surgery and diets used to treat epilepsy, for example). Some epileptologists have subspecialties in epilepsy of women, children, or geriatric populations. Several of our doctors have been voted Best Doctors of America and America's Top Physicians.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. Many epilepsy patients suffer from depression and anxiety and therefore may need to consult with a psychiatrist. As medical doctors, psychiatrists are able to prescribe psychiatric medication. Our psychiatrists are further specialized in child and adolescent, geriatric psychiatry, and/or neuropsychiatry.
Neuropsychologists are psychologists with specialized training in the study of the structure and function of the brain. Neuropsychologists administer tests to assess brain function, behavior, and emotion. Some also provide management and rehabilitation to persons who have neurological deficits. Our neuropsychologists completed additional training in epilepsy centers after earning their doctoral degree.
Psychologists hold a graduate degree in either a Ph. D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy. D. (Doctor of Psychology). The title of "Psychologist" can only be held by a professional who has completed a graduate doctoral program, an internship and has obtained state licensure through examination. Psychologists specialize in the assessment and treatment of psychological problems.
