Compared to many health care services, the billing process for eye care is among the easiest to understand. Yet some procedures, medications and prescription eyewear are handled differently by insurance providers, including Medicare. At Sabates Eye Centers, you will always know our fees upfront, as well as an estimate of whatever out-of-pocket expenses you might expect.
When Dr. Felix Sabates arrived in Kansas City, there were 39 ophthalmologists in town. Today there are more than 200. Many of which have been trained and educated by Sabates Eye Centers physicians who are also professors at UMKC's School of Medicine's Department of Ophthalmology. It's a unique arrangement, one that medical schools around the country are trying to emulate. More than 40 years ago, Dr. Felix Sabates saw a need for ophthalmology services at Kansas City's old General Hospital (now Truman Medical Centers).

Yesterday was my second annual exam at Sabates. I love that every aspect of the Sabates practice is so professional. From my arrival in the lobby, the self check-in process was easy and stress-free. I was seen on time - and that scores big points for me. The first clinician I saw was Jessica, and she conducted several tests before I saw the doctor.
She was friendly, and the confidence and care she demonstrated in her skills put me at ease. I saw Dr Baumfalk for my exam. She, too, was friendly and took her time evaluating my eyes. She reviewed her notes from my previous exam and mentioned an irregularity that she believed was worth further examination by one of their ophthalmologists. This assured me that she was looking out for the long-term health of my eyes.
Her focus was not on selling me new glasses or contacts - though I DO plan to get new glasses, and their optical shop has an amazing selection to choose from. I am so glad I found Sabates, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a full service eye center.

I've been a patient of Dr. Sabates for several years and have always experienced excellent care. I've found the staff and associated providers to be professional, courteous and dedicated. I am moving out of the region soon, but plan to always travel back in order to continue to receive my optometric and opthalmic care from this particular provider.

Very pleased with my experience at Sabates. They were able to fit me in last minute as I had an eye irritation that was causing pain. Tamara at the Front Desk was friendly and efficient. The Tech, Bayleigh, was thorough and had a very calm demeanor which was appreciated as I was nervous about my eye issue. Dr. Kellerman was professional and provided a diagnosis and a prescription as well as provided me with a sample for artificial tears. Two days later, I am healing and thankful to everyone I had contact with at Sabates.

First of all I was processed right away no waiting at front desk. And no waiting to check out and get next appointment. I needed a complete eye examination But all stations were clean and technician were calming and efficient. Of course the main attraction Dr. Robit Krishna explains everything in terms you understand. They all look professional. The office is clean.
The restrooms are clean. The surgical team was fabulous. I was so nervous. They calmed me so. They made all my anxieties disappear. Plus the surgical center is in the same building you are familiar going to. Parking is never an issue. No garages and elevators to navigate through. Good overall experience.

Dr. Baumfalk is not only a skilled professional, she also a very caring human being. I appreciate her comprehensive exam of my eyes and how she asked questions to help determine my needs and possible options in addition to all the data she had collected. I trust her to give me continued care with my eye health. Her assistant was amazing also. She explained everything she was doing so Dr. B. would have the information she would need to see the total picture of my eyes.
She was also very caring and asked questions and told me things to watch out for and what to do it if these happened. I can't say enough good things about both Dr. B. and her staff. Top-notch!

Office is very clean, everyone friendly. Testing is complete and detailed. Dr. Krishna is very detailed, explains everything about the testing, compares information from years past so you can see what progress has been done and what directions and plan of action is needed from here. I have seen him for 3 years now and have never been disappointed. Good friendly Dr.

My first appointment here has me feeling like a herded animal in line. It's a rush process of hurry up, complete the task and move to the next customer. My appointment was scheduled for 9:00 AM. The check In is automatic. At 9:14 the tech did a quick "eye check" to see which line I could read on the eye chart with my glasses on. The tech told me I had 20/20 vision.
The tech did the eye pressure check and took photos of my eyes. This took approximately 6 minutes. The tech administered eye drops to dilate my eyes, took my glasses to be read, and directed me back to the waiting room. At 10:38, the eye doctor entered to complete the exam for my 9:00 AM appointment. He stated my script was the same based on the ability to read the line and that would be my continued script for glasses.
At 10:52 I was in my car. I did comment on the long wait when the doctor entered my room. He of course apologized and said they probably should spread the appointments out as He reviewed the various scheduled appointments (every 5-10 minutes). There was no looking thru the goggles to adjust vision completed during the exam. Simply read a line if the eye chart and call it good. Also, you are required to pay a $50 "deposit" at check in, regardless of insurance coverage.
The receptionist stated my health plan covered the visit but they still require the $50. Billing will refund the $50 "sometime." Overall, the eye doctor (Dr Shah) wasn't horrrible. The tech is rushed to move people thru the process and very task oriented. If you want any type of personalized customer service or a timely visit this is not your place to go. For me, this was a very disappointing eye exam.

My one star rating is for the disappointing Sabates optical department not for the fine eye care given there by Dr. Sniekowski and Stoecklein. They deserve 4 or 5 stars. After my wife and I had our exams at Sabates last February, we tried to use our Aetna-Coventry benefit and could not even get close to our $350 benefit allowance. So we left and ordered my wife's glasses with Zenni.com on line for $100.
In August I received a $25 birthday voucher from Sabates and we went back once again. Nope you can't use your birthday gift if you have insurance.what? Guess what my last quote was $419 after the $350 insurance benefit allowance and that was using my old frames. Those $769 Lens did not including sun darkening. Today we went to Discover Vision Centers, talked to a very nice lady with 20-years with them who carefully explained what my benefits would allow, helped me select what I felt were nice, but basic metal frames and my total cost was $56 out the door which included a complete set of tinted, no line progressive lens and frames. $56 complete versus $419 for Lens alone at Sabates, what gives here? Discovery Vision has mine and my wife's forever business.

The staff are polite, welcoming and kind. I received a thorough exam and explanation of everything from cost associated, options for glasses and contacts and what to expect going forward with my eye health. I didn't feel rushed or pressured. Excellent experience from check in to leaving after selecting my new frames!

I don't love that at 50 years old that I have to go to eye appts. But because I do I LOVE coming here! They always work you in when you feel like you are having a problem and they always work with you on payments! I love Dr. Paulos and Dr. Pikey! Thank you Sabates Eye Center for make my issues your problem too!

After an insurance change (sigh), I went to this center for the first time, yesterday. I'm surprised at the number of poor ratings, as I was treated with courtesy and professionalism from the moment I entered the room. Even when I called to make the appointment, Telissa was most helpful in accommodating my somewhat weird, in and out schedule.
The waiting room is large and comfortable. I was called back fairly quickly to start the round of testing. After having my eyes dilated, I went to wait in another waiting room and then saw the doctor. This movement from one room to the other was fairly quick. While waiting for the dilation, they have TVs available. I saw Dr. Pika (not sure of the spelling) and found him to be a good listener.
I felt like I got my questions and health concerns answered so I went away happy. While the doctor did say I need new glasses, I appreciate that no one tried to strong arm me into buying them that day, at their location. They do have what looks to be a pretty well stocked area for choosing glasses but I just didn't want to spend the time shopping yesterday. Within about a half hour from start to finish, I was walking out the door, with another appointment made for next year. Not bad!

I made my appointment and as a new pt to the location at 7701 State Line. I was asked to arrive 15 minutes early. I waited an hour, and noticed another woman at the receptionist desk complaining about her appointment running late. She was scheduled at the same time I was and was also still waiting. I asked if it was routine practice to double book appointments and was told yes.
I ended up leaving. It would be nice if they valued my time as much as they apparently valued theirs. The receptionist's explanation as to why they were running late was "well, they have to dilate everyone's eyes". As if this is something that was unexpected? Sorry. Very poorly run regarding scheduling.

Avoid! First they insisted I didn't have insurance, which I do. Had to call VSP myself to prove it. Booked an appointment with an MD for a refraction exam because I was concerned there might also be medical issues. What I got was a young technician who whipped through the exam so fast that I was not able to focus on the chart or follow what she was asking me.
When she failed to match my prescription, she called in Dr. Billi Wallace, who has be the worst doctor I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. She too raced through the exam and treated me as if I were a piece of trash. I left with a "possible" diagnosis of cataracts, a directive to use over the counter eye drops and no new glasses prescription.
I was told to come back in a month to see another doctor. I don't think so! Best advice - ask your primary physician for a referral to a QUALITY optometrist or ophthalmologist. Sabates is dreadful and not worth the stress!

I'm happy that I'm not the only one who had a shitty experience here. Billi Wallace was hands down the WORST Doctor I've ever had to visit with. I was blind in one eye and scared I would never be able to see correctly again. I had been to four other doctors that could not help me. She acted as if I was playing games with her when I said I was unable to see the chart items.
She was rude and insinuated that I was pretending. I nearly lost it on this chick. I was afraid I was going to lose my job b/c of all the time I'd taken off work for various doctor's visits trying to find a resolution. I was afraid my entire life was altered due to this loss of vision. I hope karma pays her a visit someday. Doctors are supposed to HELP, not stress them out and treat them like garbage.

Worst experience ever, horrible bed side manners, was extremely manipulating throughout the entire exam (never been so stressed during an eye exam). I know that internet postings can be subjective, however I felt strong to share how unprofessional the doctor was during an exam I had. If you need a specialist I strongly recommend not wasting the time or frustration dealing with this eye doctor.

I went to the Independence Office to get a full medical examination of my eyes. I walked out with a prescription & an order for two pair of glasses per the drs. suggestion. It took almost 2 weeks to the glasses. One pair was usable 2 days before they fell apart. The other pair lasted a week. I ended up going to a glasses shop & ordered a pair which were much less expensive & a one day turn-around.
The new glasses didn't help. I still couldn't see to drive or work. A friend recommended another Dr. That Friday I went in for an exam & the following Monday my cataract was removed. Now I can see great! I ordered new glasses from the glasses shop. The lens were replace free because the precription was changed. I went to Sabates expecting the same but was surprised when the examing dr called back chewing me out because I had the nerve to say he missed the diagnosis. In my opinion I would never send anyone to Sabates. Unfortunately I spent several hundred dollars and recieved nothing but worthless glasses.
