The beginnings of HMRI date back to the early 1950s, with the establishment of two research facilities by two physicians: Pasadena Foundation for Medical Research (PFMR), founded by George Sharp in 1952, and the Institute of Medical Research of Huntington Memorial Hospital (which also housed the Pasadena Neurovascular Foundation), founded by C. Hunter Shelden in 1953.

Years of growth and mergers, innovative technologies, scientific breakthroughs and life-changing discoveries have created the HMRI you know today-a world-class biomedical research organization.

The human brain is perhaps the most complex structure in the universe. Weighing just three pounds, it's made up of 100 billion nerves and is ultimately responsible for every bodily function. There is still much to learn about the brain, and our scientists tackle the unknowns with fervor and enthusiasm.
We like to say that our neurovascular research lies at the intersection of the brain and the heart, addressing disease mechanisms of both neuronal and vascular origins. As the heart pumps blood to all parts of the body, delivering essential oxygen and nutrients-and bringing back toxins and waste to purify the organ systems-the blood travels through vascular structures like arteries, capillaries and veins. Our neurovascular scientists have found that prenatal blood vessel development molds blood cell development-a new insight.
HMRI is proud to host innovative research programs extending beyond our neurosciences, cardiovascular and neurovascular pillars. Internationally known physician-scientists are advancing their research in post-surgical pain management, colorectal and anal cancer, pelvic floor disorders, liver disease and more.
HMRI offers Core Research Services in support of others in our research community. Our shared resources can help advance the work of external partners who require additional laboratory space or imaging equipment. Our state-of-the-art lab and MR technology will enhance and expand the capabilities of any research project, and our core directors and lab personnel can provide technical expertise, consultation and training in the use of specialized equipment and research processes-all to augment your own scientific agenda.
