If I could give zero stars to this hospital I would. I hope they close down. My husband was a patient here and they didn't even try to get a bed for him anywhere else due to this condition. They wouldn't even try. Also, they lied to my face that he was there once he had been transported telling me that he fell asleep. The nurse and receptionist are rude and staff does not deserve to be a part of the hospital. They will not let you talk to your loved one and will complain about you calling. Go anywhere else but not here, trust me.

Took my brother to the ER because he felt like he had another collapsed lung. They took him back for an X-ray pretty quickly, but we waited about 4 hours for the doctor to come in and say his lungs were fine. The doctor wanted my brother to have some bloodwork done, and it took another hour for the nurse to come to do the bloodwork. Another nurse came about three hours later and wanted to take more blood.
Tired of being in the ER for 8 hours, I asked her how much longer we were going to need to be there, and she condescending said, "as long as it takes". Nobody should have to be in the ER for 8+ hours for an X-ray and bloodwork.

They deserve no stars. For a patient who is a fall risk the pad was at the foot of the bed and behind the head board. The nurse B said the doctor would call on the hospital phone but never provided the phone to the patient. The phone was Tucked behind the aspiration container. Nurses kept leaving their safe in the closet with medical supplies unlocked.
There is a lack of communication between my sister surgeon and her. The surgeon has poor beside manner. The night nurse K had the personality of a dead fish. There was a shortage on bandages. The put on bandages to protect the heels but bandages fell off and they never replaced. If you are recovering from surgery why would they come talk to you and explain anything and expect you to remember.
The wound care nurse M noted patient showed no interest in learning to care for wound. How do you expect a patient on morphine to focus? Why does the PA K visit patients at 4 or 5 am? At night time if you are in a room near the nurse's station don't expect to get any sleep. They are loud. It becomes party central. The night staff seemed offended when I complained about the noise.
If you are a walk in to the ER, expect to wait for a long time. It is better to be taken in by ambulance. Nurse L is condescending. Nurse Joanne on the surgical was a doll. Stay far away from here. The doctors spend 5 minutes or less with you the bill your insurance company for an office visit.

This is a letter i wrote to the patient relations desk at sentara: To whom it may concern, My name is Melanie Woodham and I was a patient of Sentara on Monday April 4 2022. I arrived sometime around midnight looking for help and came to the emergency room on Opitz Blvd. I am writing because I have left numerous comments on your facebook page and was asked to direct my statements here.
Your facebook administrator called my experience "less than exceptional" and "less than excellent". That is a gross understatement of the facts. Firstly, I have had extensive experience with hospitals and medical care in the last year (a 34 day stay at Inova, a thoracotomy and sternotomy to repair my mitral valve, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, liver failure, a total thyroidectomy, and hypothyroid myopathy) and I know the number one rule in medicine is to DO NO HARM.
I am angered and appalled at the way your facility's emergency room treats patients because you clearly have caused unnecessary harm and should be ashamed and expect more from your employees. On April 4, the admitting nurse was only exceptional at 1 thing: being callous and rude. Unknown to anyone at the time, I was experiencing hypothyroid myopathy and was in a pain crisis. However, I am familiar with the pain scales and told the nurses it was at a level 10.
I explained my body ached with every slight movement to the most painful degree, excruciating burning in my bones and muscles. It was also abundantly clear I had just had surgery (my dermal tape, fresh bruising, and incision clearly visible on my throat.) No one offered a wheelchair or any assistance moving me from room to room. My dad asked for water, she responded yes, and no one returned.
I was never offered a blanket, food, or a pillow. No one helped me dress or offered me socks, expecting me to walk through the bathroom barefoot. Call buttons took over TEN MINUTES to be answered over the intercom and even longer for someone to arrive, if they even came at all. No one except the doctors introduced themselves, even during shift change.
My dad clearly witnessed nurses on the phone and texting through my room window. Security was shopping on Amazon while other patients were disruptive and screaming. No one seemed to even care about my pain or even wanted to do anything to help. The sheer lack of empathy seemed to be a trend with your employees. I was shocked to experience the kind of treatment I did, and even more shocked that it was collective from almost everyone I came in contact with. Kindness was rare.
The only shining lights were the the nurse who placed my IV, a sweet nurse named Emily, and another nurse who finally brought me snacks and was kind to me later in the afternoon. I have been through a lot and can handle more than my fair share of pain, which is probably why I'm able to recover. But if this was an elderly person or an invalid, I am afraid to see what more damage your people at Sentara could cause.
If I were a weaker person, the repercussions could, and should, be worse. I can say with full confidence and conviction that if I were on my DEATHBED, I would rather drive myself 30 minutes to the next hospital than to go anywhere near another Sentara facility. I hope that my experience will be a lesson to raise your standards and train your staff appropriately.
A little kindness goes a long way. Healthcare is more than just medicine; people need empathy and compassion to heal. DO BETTER. I will happily answer any and all questions you may have so that this will never happen again to anyone or their loved ones. Regards, Melanie

I went in (again) because i felt a blood clot forming in my left leg and i was having trouble breathing (I'm have multiple autoimmune diseases and an immune deficiency disease). During this visit, it was noted on my chart that i had an enlarged heart, aorta lesion and other signs of heart disease. Nobody in the entire hospital told me this. They sent me home with Zithromax and no prednisone, despite me telling them that i have lung disease and need steroids and that Z-packs are ineffective on me.
I called my doctor when i got home and asked for a different antibiotic and prednisone. My lung doctor noticed the heart problems when checking my CT scan 3 weeks later and set me up for further testing, thankfully. This isn't the first time that i wasn't informed about abnormal bloodwork/tests in this ER either. IT IS EVERY SINGLE TIME. How incredibly effing dangerous!

I will never return to this hospital again! I came to the ER as a pregnant woman 31 weeks pregnant, experiencing a headache after a car accident. I was not screened for a concussion or evaluated. I was provided with Tylenol and no further instructions on what to look for as warning signs. An hour after check in, I'm finally taken to labor and delivery to be monitored, and give bloodwork.
Over 4 hours go by and a change of shift and no updates. After having to make a fuss, I finally meet with an OB who so casually says everything is fine and sits down and crosses his legs while sharing my bloodwork. Which showed I was anemic! I've never had that as a test result, he still causally downplayed my concerns and was very matter of fact. Needless to say I left after that brief yet disappointing encounter.
Still no idea if I have a concussion or just a headache, if I'm anemic or not. Horrible experience to be in a car accident, then have crappy care at a hospital all while being pregnant. Shame on them. With the statistics and research on the mortality rate of pregnant woman of color I'm beyond disappointed with the lackluster service I received.

AN HORIFFIC EXPERIENCE AT SENTARA. The short version. My wife was admitted as she has diabetes and in 4th stage kidney failure. once there we found out she had covid 19. she was in intensive care for a cpl. days then moved to reg. room. I spoke with my wife almost daily however, she sound out of it and dazed. it was like pulling teeth to talk with any of the dr's or nurse's to find out what was going on.
For almost two weeks I tried contacting nurse's station with no answer. My wife was there. No communication with hospital. finally I get a call after 11 days stating my wife will be able to come home the following day. Yaa!. Next day I call and of course no anwer at nurse's station. Thank God for operator, she told me My wife was back in I.C.U.
I called I.C.U to find out she throw up blood. I immediately went down to get some answers. I met with nurse in charge then I.C.U. Dr. who did not know anything beyond that day but in short said she had a leak in the gastronomic area. I also spoke with I.C.U. mgr. Public Relations, and Head nurse who all asured me that my wife and I will be taken caer of. yes my calls went thru to inquire about my wife. Well, upon picking up my wife after a few days To My surprise she had a black eye.
She told me she fell in bathroom, and laid on the floor for a while before a nurse arrive. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO A FALL RISK PATIENT! someone had to unhook her from machine! SUMMARIZE: mY WIFE WAS HELD HOSTAGE! CUT OFF FROM HER FAMILY! NOT FULLY COMPREHENSIVE! WHEN I TOLD THEM.THEY ASKED IF IT WAS DOCUMENT? REALLY? I TOLD THEM I HAVE BEEN WITH MY WIFE OVER 40 YEARS I KNOW SHE NOT FULLY UNDERSTANDING.HAD YOU TALKED TO ME I WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU.(2) STOP BEING SO MUCH INTO THE PROCESS.PATIENTS BEFORE PROCESS.and this is just the short version. Hire people that care!

Spent over 5. hour at the Lake Ridge Sentara just to watch the staff playing. NEVER got the help that was needed. NO one came in to check on us after an hour in t room. People that came in after us left with in 30 minutes. This is not the first time. They started to release me without telling me the results of my test Until I had to ask.

Oh the worst care service provider ever. I felt that I am in an undeveloped country. You will never ever receive timely high quality care in this Care Center. Shame on you and your management. They keep patients for hours and hours to be seen only by a nurse then tell you to wait for couple hours to be seen by a doctor. You have to spend the whole night or day just to been seen by a doctor in an emergency room or 24/7 urgent care center of a huge care provider in AMERICA; shame on you and your leadership.
If you can't provide good quality care services, please do something else. Don't do business with patients. Patients are not ATM machine, they need good quality care and service return of they bills they pay or their insurance.

I went to the ER for extreme abdominal pain at 1:30 am. I was promptly checked in then told to wait in the lobby. It took another hour and a half for them to start evaluating me and do the basics like taking my vitals. The lobby was not busy there were only like 3-4 other people waiting. After this little bit of work, I was just waiting for at least another hour for further evaluation.
I then went for a CT scan to see what was wrong. After about another hour, I was told I had appendicitis and that I would need surgery. I was told that they would need to call the on call surgeon and they I would be put on the list to have my surgery done. I was given this information at about 5:00 am after already being there with a potentially fatal disease for 3.5 hours.
I was told the earliest my surgery could be done was about 12:00pm. I was also told that while I was waiting for surgery I would be taken up to a room in the hospital so I could be more comfortable. I never was, I spent the entire time waiting in one of the ER rooms. We would occasionally ask the staff for something simple like blankets or an additional pillow and it would either be forgotten about, or take an unreasonable amount of time. After my surgery, I was check in overnight for observation, and I experienced the same slow service when I would make simple requests.

I would give it a zero if I could. Came to the ER needing STITCHES mid COVID time (not that I think would have changed much besides visitors can't go with you) I had to wait for a whole 3 HOURS. If I didn't wrap something on my foot before coming I could have bled all over the place. Next ER visit came here for my husband to get seen for a SWOLLEN throat.
I seriously thought that for his throat (since it's a COVID symptom) would be seen faster. Oh and did I mention we got here at 6 in the MORNING. It's literally about to be 11 like how do you still make people be waiting with no update, no time estimate or anything! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME COMING HERE.
